THE CLOTH LIBRARY

Cloth changes the character of a garment before a single measurement is taken. Weight, texture, color and drape all affect how a piece looks, moves and feels when worn.

At the Scarborough showroom in San Francisco, Christian works with an extensive library of suiting, jacketing, shirting and formalwear cloth from leading European mills, selecting with each client according to the garment, the season and the way it will be worn.

SUITING & JACKETING

From year-round worsteds and flannels to linen, cashmere, silk blends and more expressive seasonal cloths, the library covers a wide range of weights, weaves and finishes. Christian helps narrow the field based on how the garment needs to perform, the silhouette being created and the client’s own preferences. The selection includes suiting and jacketing from mills such as Loro Piana, Scabal, Dormeuil, Zegna, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Reda and Piacenza.

SHIRTING

Scarborough shirts can be as traditional or as individual as the client wants them to be. Christian works through the details with you, from collar and cuff styles to pockets, buttons, fronts, backs and monogramming. The range extends well beyond classic dress shirts, including formal tuxedo shirting as well as more relaxed pieces such as short-sleeve safari shirts, western-inspired denim shirts and other custom variations.

The cloth selection is equally broad, with options spanning different weights, textures, colors and patterns. Christian typically recommends Italian shirtings from mills such as Thomas Mason, Albini and Canclini for their quality, range and consistency, while guiding the choice according to how the shirt will be worn and how the client wants it to feel.

VICUÑA, BY REQUEST

For clients looking for something extraordinary, Scarborough can source vicuña fabric by request for custom tailoring.

Vicuña is prized for an extraordinarily fine, lightweight fiber that combines softness with natural warmth. Its rarity and limited availability place it among the most exclusive cloths used in tailoring. Depending on the collection available at the time, Christian can source vicuña cloth from mills such as Loro Piana and Piacenza for jackets, suits and other custom garments and guide the client through the options best suited to the piece being created.

Because availability is limited, vicuña selections are handled individually. Contact Christian in advance if you are interested in commissioning a garment in vicuña.
